Dr. Mark McDonald holds board certifications in both child and adult psychiatry, and sees patients of all ages for medication management and talk-based therapy.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. McDonald graduated from Loyola High School and studied classical cello and world literature at UC Berkeley before beginning medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his adult psychiatry residency at the University of Cincinnati and child psychiatry fellowship at Harbor-UCLA in Los Angeles. He has particular expertise in working with children with autism and trauma, as well as obsessive-compulsive and bipolar disorders. When evaluating children, he works closely with the family, school, pediatrician, and therapist to ensure a   complete evaluation before making any recommendations for treatment.

Dr. McDonald uses a structural systems approach in working with couples and families in therapy. He is also a candidate in psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Center of California (PCC) and adopts a psychoanalytic approach to therapy with individuals, including play therapy with children.

Having worked and studied for several years in Switzerland, Japan, France, and Mexico, Dr. McDonald speaks French, Spanish, and Japanese. He has also trained for many years in the martial arts, including Krav Maga, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Aikido.

Dr. McDonald’s private practice is located in West L.A. and is virtually paperless, with a fully electronic medical record with patient portal and e-prescribing. Time-saving tools that benefit his patients include virtual signature, electronic patient symptom scales, and cutting edge Apple-based cloud server software on a Mac Air, iPad, and iPhone.
